His family’s vast fortune meant he was able to dedicate his life to aeronautical study and experimentation. Alberto was a Brazilian living in Paris, heir to a large coffee-growing empire. Louis Cartier’s inspiration came from his close friend and aviation pioneer, Alberto Santos -Dumont. Louis-Francois’ vision was flourishing beyond expectation.1903 was the year that saw Cartier’s most significant step into the world of watch making when they created their first ever wristwatch, designed with pilots in mind. King Edward VII famously labelled the brand “the jeweller of kings, and the king of the jewellers.” In 1904 Cartier would then go on to be awarded the title of official supplier to the English court by Queen Alexandra, Edward’s Consort. Being a great influencer of the time people noticed the somewhat unusual addition to his wrist and started to ask questions. His new wristwatch was worn for every flight, he loved it, it had provided the perfect solution to his problem. The watch he created had a square bezel and was flat, and most critically a leather strap would attach it to the wrist perfectly.During this time Santos-Dumont was quite the celebrity, his attempts at flight were very well documented and would be a monumental achievement when successful. Rather than work on producing an instrument for the plane, Cartier decided to develop the pocket watch into what is widely acknowledged as being the world’s first purpose-built wristwatch, and certainly the world’s first pilots watch. Cartier needed to produce something which could be fixed in place, easy to see and not have a great impact on the aircrafts weight allowance. Still today, total weight is one of the most important calculations to be made before taking flight, so I am sure you can imagine the importance of it in the early development of achieving the first flight.
It did not take long for him to get in contact with Edmond Jaeger of Jaeger-LeCoultre to request they begin to mass produce the movement for the watches. (There are other famous acknowledgements of wristwatches prior to the Santos, most notably Breguet’s piece for the Queen of Naples in 1810, and the 1879 military order from Girard-Perregaux.) Other than carrying the name of the Parisian jeweller, Cartier London had become independent and self-sufficient.1906 introduced to us the Baignoire de Cartier, “baignoire” translates to bathtub, which makes perfect sense when you consider the image of the traditional bathtub. They were able to design, produce, and assemble all their own products. The capabilities of Cartier London were unheard of at this time, they had the facilities to go through the entire production process without leaving the city.
The design was embraced with open arms and quickly found itself becoming a classic, a timepiece that would be considered highly significant in the history of watchmaking. Up until this point almost all watches were round, and whilst the Baignoire teased the idea of moving away from the traditional shape, the Tortue made a much bolder move. 1912 then brought us the Tortue, which translates to Tortoise, and again makes perfect sense when you look at the watch.
